Summer Reading Challenge 2024
The Summer Reading Challenge - everything you need to know!
First things first. It's great fun. Kids love it.
Reading is far from boring, it opens a world of discovery, adventure and freedom. Rainy day during the school holidays? Not to worry, you can have a day fighting dragons from your armchair or zoom through the galaxy in an indoor tent. Or maybe you're feeling the pinch and looking for ways to entertain the family for free?
Visit the library, choose a book together, go to the park, choose a character each, do funny voices...cue lots of laughs and hours go by!
The Summer Reading Challenge is our way of helping parents and carers make reading interesting and fun. A dip in reading skills during the summer holidays can be avoided whilst creating lots of lovely memories.
How does it work? All you need to do is visit your local library and tell the staff there you'd like to sign your child up for the challenge. You'll receive an activity pack and you can collect stickers and stamps along the way, 6 books complete the challenge! Finishers get a certificate to frame and keep forever, as well as a medal to proudly show off.
Be one of the Marvellous Makers This year’s Challenge is all about creativity. From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there’s something for everyone! Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts and access free activities at the library. We can’t wait to get creative!

Marvellous fun at your local library!
"The Summer Reading Challenge is my favourite thing to do with the kids during the holidays. I love that it's free, it's local and with my kids being all different ages, I can find books that suit their level of reading ability and also their own individual interests" - Suzanne, mum of 3
